Taking Afton to Afton

When I was pregnant last winter my boss and I got talking about a cabin he owned but never used. He said, "you and Pete should go up there!" and I said, "seven months pregnant?" and he said, "oh yeah, maybe not. You would have to snowshoe in." So it was a definite no. But then whven Peter and I started talking about getting away sometime this summer I decided to see if that offer still stood. And it did! So we chose the dates and planned our little getaway for early June. My boss was so nice to let us go and recommended a few things for us to do while we were there.

Peter said he really wanted to go without a strict agenda. He wanted to have the chance to get bored, since that rarely happens for us amongst our busy schedules. So we loaded up some fishing poles and a Bjorn for Afton, and were on our way.

The timing for this trip was supposed to be perfect; Pete would turn in his medical school application in the morning and we would leave later that day stress free. However, there were technical difficulties with the online program and it would not be open for submission until the day we were due back. So that put a slight damper on things but Pete was really good about putting the stress aside and still making the most out of our vacation.

We left Thursday and made it to the cabin in Star Valley just before dark. We had fun driving through the small towns surrounding Star Valley on our way in and I think we even saw where Peter lived while his dad did a rotation in Afton when he was little.
This is how Afton felt about the trip. :)

The next day we woke up and headed to Jackson Hole another 45 minutes further. It was a fun day--I had never been there so it was fun to see--but it probably was our least favorite day of the trip. We did enjoy seeing the Tetons and hiking around a little though. We planned to do some real hiking but a crazy ranger scared us out of it by saying we shouldn't go without buying Bear Spray for $50! We didn't really want to fork over the cash, nor subject Afton to any bears. So we just hiked around the visitors center for a bit.

The last few days of our trip consisted of yummy local restaurants (there are about 2) and hiking, fishing, red boxes and some junk food--because after all, we were on vacation!

We hiked to a geyser (supposedly the largest fresh water one in the world) to see the intermittent springs, which in fact were not intermittent because we were there during the warmest months of the year, but it still was awesome and gorgeous! Before this hike was really the only bad moment Afton had the entire trip. She was fussing and we couldn't figure out why. But I'm sure it was just all the heat and car rides we had subjected her to. She was a trooper!

We played some tennis one of the days and drove around looking for Pete's great-uncle's cabin that he went to as a kid. We found that and Pete took a trip down memory lane for a moment.

On Sunday we found a local ward to attend and then made our own dinner at the cabin and went on a scenic drive and admired the small town of Afton.
Our sad attempt at a family picture

It was the perfect little quiet getaway for our little family!

  1. Next time you want to go to Jackson let me know. My family has been going up there every year since before I was born. Its like a second home to me. There are plenty of easy beautiful hikes that don't require bear spray. In fact I've never seen a bear up there and we've been looking. Its really an amazing place.
