A March Briefing

A few things we have been up to lately:

Baseball games! Peter is helping coach the sophomore Orem High baseball team so when it is warm Afton and I go to the games for a bit. And sometimes when it isn't warm too. Because we happened to have this little coat from Aunt Bessie and it was Orem colors when we paired it with her minion hat! So how could we resist? People kept saying "that is a really cute boy!" Whoops!

Playing dress ups with dad. I always thought I would be the one dressing up our daughter. But Pete sent me these pictures while I was at the office one day. Afton thought it was pretty funny.
On St. Patricks Day we got together with some friends of ours in our ward, Jane & Kesler Tanner. Jane made us dinner--a cheese fondue sauce--and it was delicious! We had a fun time celebrating the holiday with some festive cookies and our (root) beer.
Trying ice cream for the first time! We had a little family date at Macey's and let Afton have a few licks of our cones.
Afton has really taken to her party hat I made for her first birthday. If only she wanted to wear it at her actually party. Such is life :)
Waking up with awesome hair after going to bed with it wet.

Me and my sister Maggie took our nieces and nephews to the new Peppermint Place one day. They didn't care much for the candy factory part. They just kept asking when they could pick out a candy.

Trying out pig tails for the first time. We decided it wasn't her best look, but still cute!

On a family hike up Battle Creek falls on Pete's day off.

Quarter of a Century

I forgot to blog about my birthday back in January! It was a wonderful day/week and I was definitely spoiled by my family.

I had to teach dance the evening of my birthday so Pete was planning a surprise to bring cupcakes to my last class. He kept asking things like how many girls were in my class and what time I was done but I didn't think much of it. My sister, Katie, was also planning to bring cupcakes since her daughter was in that last class. Neither knew the other was doing it and so they both showed up with a lot of chocolate cupcakes and we had a good laugh. It was so sweet of them and the little girls in my class LOVED it!

Peter got me a workout video (Step Up Hip Hop Cardio) I had been wanting and some pink hand weights so I wouldn't have to use bottles of BBQ sauce or vinegar from our food storage any more. He and my mom also pitched in together to fix up an old sewing machine my mom had lying around. It has been wonderful to be able to pull that out and work on a few small projects! My mom got me some running clothes as well which are awesome! And my mother-in-law took me shopping and picked out some new running shoes and a cute shirt from J Crew. I don't know if I should have taken a hint by all the workout things I received but that is what you get for being born in January with all the New-Years-Resolution-Work-Out business going on. Plus, it's what I wanted :)

It was a great day and I felt so loved by all my family! I thought 25 would feel old but it has been good to me so far. I feel mature in a good way, but that is probably more to do with being a mom to this girl than it is with my age :)

Twelve to One

This is the last of my monthly updates for our little miss Afton. I will still update every few months to try and keep up with her changes.

At 12 months Afton:

-Is walking while holding our hands. She occasionally walks around furniture or while holding one hand but she can't go as fast that way and she likes to cruise! My sister, Amy, gave us Colin's old fire truck and she does pretty well with that. She does better when Pete is around; if I try to make her do it she will want to hold one hand and put the other on the fire truck. Michelle bought her some rightly sized shoes for her birthday and I think those have helped with her confidence a ton. (Those cute MaryJane black ones we have were actually too big! I didn't realize it. Whoops).

-Repeats a lot and has said quite a few things on her own. Mostly "da" or "dada." She will say it whenever she hears him in the other room or when he comes into the room she is in. No fair. But totally cute. She signs milk all the time which just breaks my heart since I have been trying to wean her, but she has been pretty willing to give up nursing.

-She also says "da" when she sees a dog and makes a little barking noise. Michelle bought her a little "lulu" dog to match the Sundwall's dog Lulu. She loves the little thing!

-Has gotten really good at pointing to what she wants and shaking her head "no" when she doesn't want something. It helps in being able to communicate quite a bit.

-Sings. Sometimes when there is music on for a bit and then I turn it off she will hum/sing. Also, I sing to her a lot while I hold her by her bed getting ready to put her down; sometimes if I am quiet she will do a little singing.

-Picks up anything to use it as a phone. When she hears a phone ring or sees someone on the phone she pretends she is on the phone too. She did this for the first time in Relief Society when we were visiting at an Alpine ward. Some of the ladies watching her thought it was so funny and ever since she has decided that is the funnest thing in the world. She also is figuring out uses for so many other objects (like hair clips and combs for her hair, cups for drinking, pens for writing, etc.)
That bag of steamed cauliflower kept her busy for a good 30 min at the office

-Likes to feed herself. She has been finger feeding herself for months now and does for most meals. However, for 1 or 2 meals a day I try to feed her yogurt or applesauce. Not every time but most times she will let me feed her for a while and then about halfway through she will refuse to eat until I hand her the spoon. She hands it right back to be filled back up but then flings a lot of the spoon's contents in the process of getting the spoon away from me. I have learned to hand it to her willingly but she still feels the need to yank it out of my hands, which makes for a messy situation. I have learned to only feed her those messy things when I will be chaining her into a new outfit soon anyway (like at the beginning or end of the day).

-At the doctor's office she weighed 18.5 pounds and was 28.5 inches long. She is wearing 9-12 month clothing now as I am slowly transitioning all of her 6 month clothing out.

-Also at the doctor's office, we were in the jungle room where there are paintings of jungle animals all over. She was pointing to them so I started saying "what does a monkey say?" Then I would make the sound and she would repeat--just like we have done millions of times with her Noah's Ark book. For some reason this time she really took to the elephant. And now any time we ask her "what does ____ say?" she makes the elephant sound (spitting her tongue out). At the office though she also did a lion, which is new, by whispering a little "roar". It's the best. She did it for a couple days after but then after getting so many laughs at the elephant she has decided to stick with that for most animal sounds.

-Has developed a high pitched throaty scream that is surely ruining her vocal cords as well as my eardrums. She does it both when she is crying as well as when she just wants something. I have been taken aback these last couple weeks at how whiney she is! I think we are just entering that phase of her wanting specific things and not being able to communicate them or do them on her own. We are working on pointing at things more specifically and trying to sign. Hopefully it will motivate her to communicate better instead of just scream and give mom a headache :). Any suggestions on how to help during this phase are appreciated!

-Is happy around bigger kids, meaning kids older than her. Some of her happiest times are when I am willing to walk her around while big kids are around (at stores, at Grandma & Grandpa Millar's when cousins are over, etc.) Luckily, the weather is getting nicer so getting her out of the house and finding other kids to interact with isn't too hard.
Getting to play on cousin Brigham's car is just too exciting!

-While Afton is much more restless and into things, she is also so interactive and fun. She gives loves (hugs, kisses, cuddles) to her mom very freely and will still smile and make friends with anyone. The other day I was holding her and stood us in front of the mirror together. She pressed her cheek up against mine and smiled like it was family photo time. I wish I could have caught in on camera! I laughed at her cheesiness and just couldn't help but squeeze that silly little girl. It is so fun to see her "get" life more and more.
At Mimi's birthday party Afton helped herself to some frosting as I was cutting the cake a bit too close to Afton's reach. She was happy as a clam about that little fact.

The Miss Turns One!

We celebrated Afton's birthday with our families at Pete and Michelle's house. We were staying in Alpine with the Allen family that week so Michelle graciously hosted even though she came down with something and was feeling very sick!
Cousin Maren Jane was the first to play the game

Cousin Jennsen playing

We played Pin the Curl on the Birthday Girl and a matching game to see who could match up photos of Afton from each month of her life in the correct order. Pete and I had a fun time picking out some of our favorite photos to use for this game but then even we weren't sure what order they went in. So I made a key and stuck to it. It was a tough game! The winner ending up getting 6 of the 12 pictures in the correct order!
The key

We had chocolate cupcakes and ice cream. Afton enjoyed her first taste of cake though she kind of lost interested when everyone else lost interest in watching her. Typical :). She was pretty tired and had a long day so it was tough to get any good pictures.

On the Saturday before her party, I made party hats with the Allen girls and had fun doing that. A few of the kids wore them and it was pretty cute. Of course, Afton wanted nothing to do with her so we tried to snap a quick picture and then we took it off.
Sadly the best family picture we got

Cousin Brigham enjoyed sporting the birthday hats

At the party we had Pete, Michelle, Jeff, Olivia, Zach (Jessica had to perform in Les Mis that night), Boofie, Grandpa, Rita (Bret had an important business meeting), Katie, Emma, Ellie, Brigham, Jed, Maren Jane, Tess, Amy, Ben, Colin, & Jennsen and the 4 oldest Allen girls. The kids enjoyed playing in the basement most of the time. Afton was spoiled with toys, clothes, and some dishes. We feel lucky and blessed to have such loving and supportive families!

And...alright I'm done with this!

February Whirlwind

During the month of February we were in and out of town. It felt a bit weird to be out of our regular routine but it made the cold month go by faster!

At the beginning of the month we made a road trip to Salida, CO for Peter's cousin's baptism. The roads were a bit scary and there were storm warnings that weekend so we debated going or not. But in the end we wanted to be there to support Zeke and so we made the trek and were so happy we did! We had a wonderful weekend getaway and some great time with the Sundwall side of the family!
As we got closer to Salida we learned that the last mountain pass to it was closing and we wouldn't make it to Salida that night. So we stopped in Gunnison and stayed at a really nice motel until we could continue our journey the following morning. Thanks to Pete's parents for putting us up for the night! Afton was happy to be out of the car and able to crawl around on the bed (above).

Afton loved cousin Eli! And Eli warmed up to her after a bit too!

Dad trying to keep Afton warm in Salida
Taking pictures of herself to keep her busy during the long car ride.

She thought she was so cool wearing these sun glasses!

We celebrated the Olympic opening ceremonies with some patriotic sugar cookies and my dad Slingboxed the entire olympics to us so we could see them even though we do not own a TV. Best dad ever!

In mid-February we stayed with a family of 5 girls in Alpine while their parents went on a cruise. They devoured Afton and she soaked up every minute of the never-ending attention. We had a fun time with this family and their sweet girls. Pete is now saying that if we only had girls, he would be totally fine with that!

We finished tending the Allens on Sunday evening and began tending Peter's little brother and sister the following Friday. Poor Afton was a bit thrown off but she took it all in stride!

Here she is playing and looking like a teenager! Mimi bought Afton those new little sneakers for her birthday and they just look too cute on her tiny feet!

While we were at the Sundwalls, Afton came down with a fever and a runny nose for a couple of days. But slept it off pretty quick. I enjoyed the zonked-out cuddles!

Sleeping in yet another playpen like a champ!

All in all it was a great month! We celebrated Afton's birthday (more to come) and enjoyed a little out of the ordinary activities.
