Appendectomy

--Beware of graphic pictures in this post--

Peter had to get his appendix taken out at the beginning of February. It was quite the ordeal. He called me Monday while I was at work around 11:00am and said he was hurting really bad. He decided to go to practice to see if he could throw even though he was in so much pain. He had some things to take care of on campus so he wanted to stay. But by 2:00pm he called me and was still in so much pain that we decided to go to the doctor.

The doctor and Pete's dad both were unsure if it was his appendix so they sent us in to get some blood work done. The blood work showed normal count of white blood cells so we went home. After a painful night without any sleep, Pete was still in so much pain. So the next morning at 7:00am we took him to the hospital and had a ct scan done. They found that his appendix did look a little inflamed and decided to do an emergency appendectomy. By 3:00pm Pete was headed into the surgery room.

When the surgeon came to talk to me about how things went he showed me the following pictures...if you have a weak stomach don't read on.

When they went into Pete's stomach laparoscopically they found that his appendix was not that inflamed and they wondered why he was in so much pain. So after looking around they found what the surgeon believed to be a Meckel's Diverticulum--potentially cancerous. They took both his appendix and the Meckels out and sent the Meckels to get a biopsy, just in case. We had to wait a week to find out that it wasn't cancerous and that all was well inside Pete.

That week I got to wait on Peter's every hand and foot. He was so out of it, the poor kid and still in so much pain. We had a fun time playing hooky from work and school and spending the days watching classic old movies (like Back to the Future) and enjoying meals brought in by our wonderful, caring families.

It was an adventure. Being married for less than two months, I got to see Pete in a way I never had before. I was able to take care of him in a way he would never let me if he was fully aware and capable. Even though it was very painful for Pete and hard for both of us, it brought us closer together and reminded us how blessed we are to have all that we do!
